Certification
The traditional route to becoming a public school teacher involves completing a bachelor’s degree from a teacher education program and then obtaining a license. However, most states now offer alternative routes to licensure for those who have a college degree in other fields.In order to work in New York public schools, all teachers MUST have valid certification from the New York State Education Department.

Prerequisite
A Bachelor Degree from an accredited institution with Minimum GPA of 2.5
There is No Masters degree required to obtain a 5-year Initial Teacher Certification until February 1, 2012. After then, everyone will be required to complete a US Masters. Certify NOW as soon as you can! Requirements
1. Pass LAST (Liberal Arts and Sciences Test)
2. ATS-W (Primary/Secondary) and
3. CST (Content Specialty Tests)
4. Child abuse one-day workshop
5. SAVE (Violence Prevention) one-day workshop
6. Submit official transcripts of all colleges that you have attended to Education Department and fulfill required credit requirement
7. 40 days Full Time Teaching Experience
8. Fingerprint clearance
9. $100 application fee
